FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State House of Assembly has called on Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia to prioritize the establishment of agro-allied industries across the state as part of efforts to drive economic growth and reduce unemployment.
The call was made on Tuesday, 2nd September; during plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Alfred Berger Emberga, following a motion moved by Hon. Samuel Anyor Matu (Kwande East Constituency).
Hon. Matu noted that Benue, being a predominantly agrarian state blessed with fertile soil, produces abundant crops that are often sold without value addition due to the absence of processing industries. He emphasized that the situation has contributed significantly to unemployment and low income levels among farmers.
He stressed that Benue yam, recognized as one of the best varieties globally, lacks a processing industry to transform it into an internationally competitive product. According to him, establishing such industries would not only add value but also stimulate massive agricultural production.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Bemdoo Ipusu said agro-allied industries would guarantee better returns for farmers and create job opportunities for the youth. Hon. Douglas Akya added that the initiative would transform Benue from being known solely as the “Food Basket of the Nation” to also becoming a “Wealth Basket.”

Also contributing, Hon. Thomas Dugeri urged the government to investigate why previously existing agro-industries in the state collapsed, in order to prevent future failures. He further called for the creation of an enabling environment for private investors to participate in the sector.
After deliberations, the House resolved:
To commend the APC-led government in the state for modest steps in industrialization through the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC).
To urge the executive to establish more agro-allied industries that will encourage mass production, enhance value addition, boost the state’s GDP, and improve per capita income.
