Benue Assembly Members Visit Yelwata Attack Victims, Donate Relief Items to IDPs

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, on Monday, 22nd July 2025, paid a heartfelt sympathy visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) temporarily camped at the Makurdi International Market following recent attacks in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area.

The attacks forced hundreds of families to flee their homes, and the visit by lawmakers aimed to show solidarity and provide much-needed support. Accompanying the Speaker was the Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, Hon. Peter Bemdoo Ipusu, among other members.

The Assembly delegation was warmly received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu Aondoakaa, PhD, alongside the camp manager, Mr. Robert Nyom.

During the visit, the lawmakers donated food and essential relief items to help ease the hardship faced by the displaced families.

Sir James Aondoakaa expressed deep gratitude for the kind gesture, describing it as both timely and compassionate. He lauded Speaker Dajoh, Hon. Ipusu, and the Assembly for their empathy and leadership.

“This visit is a powerful demonstration of leadership with a human face,” Sir James said. “Under my leadership, BSEMA remains committed to improving the welfare of IDPs through consistent access to nutritious food, healthcare, and shelter until they can safely return home.”

Speaking on behalf of the Assembly, Speaker Dajoh reiterated their commitment to supporting government agencies like BSEMA in delivering timely and effective humanitarian responses across the state.

The visit emphasized the importance of collaboration among lawmakers, humanitarian agencies, and government institutions in addressing crises. It also reaffirmed the critical role of legislative backing in sustaining humanitarian efforts in Benue State.

Benue continues to stand as a beacon of compassion, unity, and resilience in the face of adversity.
