Benue Deputy Governor Pledges Lasting Peace for Kwande Community

FIC Report (Benue State) – Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Sam Ode, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area, vowing to address the ongoing crisis without bias.

Speaking during an emergency meeting with stakeholders and traditional rulers at Government House, Makurdi, on Monday, March 17, 2025, Dr. Ode emphasized that the Governor Hyacinth Alia-led administration remains dedicated to protecting lives and property regardless of tribe or religion. He assured the people that security measures would be intensified to facilitate the safe return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral lands and enable them to resume farming activities.

Chairman of Kwande Local Government Council, Mr. Vitalis Neji, expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his unwavering efforts to improve security in the area, despite recurring attacks by suspected herdsmen. He highlighted the devastating impact of these incidents, which continue to claim lives and destroy property.

The Tor Kwande, Chief Ambrose Iortyer, called on the state government to ensure that security personnel who fail to resolve the crisis are withdrawn. Meanwhile, the Ter Kwande, Chief Timothy Ahile, emphasized the need for dialogue between the Turan community (Moon and Ikomon, along with the Mbadura people) and the Takum people. He also urged the state government to collaborate with Taraba State for a lasting resolution, provide farm inputs for affected communities, and carry out a proper boundary demarcation to prevent further conflicts.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Mr. Fidelis Unongu, suggested the allocation of land along the Benue-Taraba border to the Federal Government for the establishment of a Mobile Police Base, which would help maintain peace in the area.

The President General of the Turan Development Association, Mr. Festus Iorkyaa, commended Governor Alia for prioritizing the safety and welfare of the people amid the long-standing border dispute.

In separate remarks, Special Adviser on External Security, Retired Colonel Igbaya Ashingu, and Special Adviser on Internal Security, Mr. Joseph Har, praised the resilience of the Kwande people despite persistent attacks. They urged the community to continue supporting Governor Alia’s administration, which remains committed to restoring lasting peace across Benue State.
