FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State Government has taken a major step towards transforming its agricultural sector with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of an integrated agro-industrial estate, as Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia presided over the ceremony at Government House, Makurdi, on Monday, March 16, 2026.
The agreement, signed with AGROBENUE Industrial Development (ABID) and its technical partners, underscores the administration’s commitment to repositioning agriculture from subsistence practice to a modern, commercially driven and industrialized sector.
Speaking at the event, Governor Alia described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at unlocking the full economic potential of agriculture in Benue State through value addition, processing, and expanded market access.
He noted that although Benue is widely known as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” the future of agriculture lies in building a system that integrates production with processing, packaging, and global market distribution.
According to the Governor, the proposed investment of about $530 million will support the establishment of a comprehensive agro-industrial estate covering the entire agricultural value chain, including production, storage, processing, and logistics.
He stated that the project will significantly reduce post-harvest losses, improve food availability, and increase farmers’ incomes, while also generating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for youths.
Governor Alia further explained that key crops such as yam, cassava, rice, soybeans, and grains will be processed into higher-value products, thereby strengthening local industries and enhancing the state’s competitiveness in both regional and international markets.
He assured that necessary groundwork has been completed to ensure seamless implementation, including land surveys and required documentation, while a Steering and Technical Committee has been established to coordinate activities and ensure transparency.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investors, noting that the project will expand economic activities, boost internally generated revenue, and support investments in critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security.
He expressed confidence that the initiative will position Benue State as a leading agro-industrial hub in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
