FIC Report (Benue State) – Stakeholders working to end Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Benue State have presented a communique to Governor Hyacinth Alia, highlighting key gaps and demanding stronger action to protect women, girls and vulnerable groups.
The communique was submitted at the close of the 2025 “16 Days of Activism Against GBV,” coordinated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare with support from CSOs and development partners.
Stakeholders commended the government’s support to the Sexual Assault and Referral Centre (SARC) and ongoing human rights efforts but noted persistent challenges, including widespread GBV, weak enforcement of laws, limited support services, harmful cultural practices, low awareness and an overstretched SARC serving the entire state.
Key Recommendations Include:
Amending the Benue VAPP Law and domesticating CEDAW.
Establishing SARCs in all 23 LGAs and improving funding for the Makurdi SARC.
Providing free medical, legal and psychosocial services and creating shelters.
Expanding sensitization with traditional and religious leaders.
Increasing budget allocations for GBV prevention and women’s empowerment.
Strengthening capacity of police, judiciary, health workers and SARC personnel.
Creating a multi-stakeholder task force for monitoring and accountability.
The communique was signed by the Ministry of Women Affairs, NHRC, Caritas Nigeria, BSARC, Elohim Development Foundation and Okaha Women and Children Development Organization.
It was received by the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs. Magdalena Andoor, on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner.
