FIC Report (Benue State) – Benue State is set to drive economic diversification by promoting the export of its agricultural produce, Chairman of the State Committee on Export Promotion and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Mr. Cephas Hough, has said.
Speaking during an interface with the State Committee on Export Promotion on Thursday 13th, 2025. Mr. Hough emphasized the need for concerted efforts to develop and expand the state’s export sector. He noted that fostering an export-driven economy would attract incentives from the State Government, Federal Government, and key stakeholders, ultimately leading to economic growth and job creation.
To accelerate this vision, Mr. Hough announced that meetings of the State Export Promotion Committee Council would now be held more regularly to strategize and implement policies that enhance export activities in the state.
Also speaking at the meeting, Mr. Friday Ogiri, State Coordinator of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), expressed concerns over Nigeria’s over-reliance on oil, which has contributed to economic instability. He called for the creation of an enabling environment for businesses to access funding from financial institutions to support export initiatives.
Highlighting the key export commodities from Benue, Mr. Ogiri stressed the importance of sesame seeds and soya beans, urging committee members to actively support Mr. Hough in achieving the goals of the NEPC in Benue State.
Committee members at the meeting also put forward recommendations, including:
Reduction in multiple taxation to encourage local businesses.
Formation of farmer clusters and cooperatives to strengthen the agricultural value chain.
Increased government support to enable farmers access loans.
Collaboration with the State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to develop a structured agricultural system, particularly in rural areas.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders to positioning Benue as a leading exporter of agricultural produce, ensuring long-term economic sustainability and development.
