FIC Report (Benue State) – A coalition of women’s organizations in Benue State, including the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), marked International Women’s Day with an advocacy walk on Friday, March 7, 2025, to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The walk commenced at the High-Level Underpass and concluded at the Victoria Atorough Complex on Bank Road. Participants carried placards with powerful messages such as “No Woman, No Nation,” “Support Women,” and “Say No to Domestic Violence and Abuse
Addressing the gathering, the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Deborah Aber, emphasized the need for sustained advocacy on women’s rights and empowerment. She encouraged women to actively participate in development efforts and called for greater opportunities for them to serve in leadership roles to drive gender equality forward.
NAWOJ Benue State Chairperson, Comrade Elizabeth Achagh, reiterated the importance of achieving the 35% affirmative action for women’s representation in governance. She urged policymakers to involve women in decision-making processes, particularly in policies that directly affect them.
President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Benue State, Dr. Patience Okpe, highlighted the persistent neglect of women in various sectors. She called for a shift in societal attitudes and encouraged women to prioritize their personal development, mental well-being, and physical health to make a greater impact on their families and communities.
The event underscored the collective commitment of Benue women to advocating for equality, inclusion, and meaningful participation in governance and society.
