BSEMA, IOM Strengthen Partnership To Deliver Critical Humanitarian Interventions In Benue

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and other humanitarian partners to safeguard the dignity and well-being of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.

This renewed commitment comes as the Agency commended IOM’s plan to construct a Water Reticulation Plant that will purify raw water from the Naka Dam to meet global standards for safe human consumption.

The Permanent Secretary of the Agency, Sir James Iorpuu, PhD, stated this on November 28th, 2025, in Naka town during a joint BSEMA–IOM coordination tour to assess ongoing efforts in providing essential services such as food, water, sanitation, and hygiene for IDPs. He was represented by the Programme Manager for IDPs Operations, Orseer Gaius Zege.

Sir James reiterated BSEMA’s commitment to supporting humanitarian partners in implementing durable solutions for displaced persons, including safe and dignified return, resettlement, and reintegration.

He commended IOM for its plan to establish a new water treatment plant to complement the existing facility built by the Victims Support Fund (VSF), describing the proposed project as a critical intervention that will significantly improve the quality and availability of clean water for IDPs and host communities.

Speaking during the tour, the Head of IOM Sub-Office, Makurdi, Mediatrice Berangayo (Dooshima), who led a team of IOM engineers, noted that the project aims to ensure equitable, safe, and adequate access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services for both IDPs and host communities. She also applauded BSEMA and the Gwer West Local Government Council for their continued efforts in addressing the needs of displaced populations.

The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Hon. Ormin Torsaa Titus, who accompanied the team to the water treatment site, pledged to provide land for the construction of the new plant. He reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to work closely with BSEMA and IOM for the overall benefit of the people.
