FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State House of Assembly, on Thursday 6 February 2025, during a plenary presided by the Speaker Chief Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, called on the Benue State Government to immediately provide financial, medical and material assistance to the injured survivors of the tragic accident in Okete, Ohimini Local Government Area.
The House also directs the Benue State Ministry of power, Renewable Energy and Transport to conduct a thorough investigation in to the circumstances surrounding the State of the road and ensure strict compliance with Roads Safety Regulations to prevent future tragedies.
This followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by member representing Ohimini State Constituency Hon. Ochekliye Agbo Isaac, informing the house about the horrific incident has caused untold pain and suffering to families in Ohimini and left survivors in desperate need of urgent assistance.
Recall that on the 20th of January, 2025, a tragic accident occured in Okete, Ohimini Local Government where a parked Peugeot J5 Van, carrying Women and Goods was hit by a long truck at about 1: 00 am leading to loss of many lives, property, with many injured.
Also during Plenary the House called on the Benue State Emergency Management Agency to visit the scene of the inferno at Obarike – Ito and investigate the remote and immediate causes of the fire outbreak with a view to preventing similar occurrences in the future as well provide relief materials to the owners of the shops as well as the artisans and traders whose equipment and wares were destroyed in the inferno.
This was the resolutions of the House when Hon. Moses Egbodo representing Obi State Constituency, moved a motion of urgent public importance informing the house that the fire outbreak at Obarike Ito Market which occured on 1st February 2025, and burnt down multiple shops, destroying all the wares and equipments in the affected shops worth several millions of Naira.
Seconding the motion, Member representing Okpokwu State Constituency Rt. Hon. Anthony Agom lamented the ugly incidence of fire outbreaks in State and called on the State Government to look in to the plight of the people whose properties were destroyed by the inferno.
