Clean Water At Last: Governor Alia Flags Off 500,000l/Day Water Treatment Plant In Naka

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has flagged off the construction of a 500,000 litres-per-day Water Treatment Plant in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area, as part of deliberate efforts to address water scarcity and improve the welfare of the people.

The flag-off ceremony was held on Friday, 12th December, 2025, with the Governor represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Humanitarian and Disaster Management, Hon. Kunde Aondoawase, who conveyed the administration’s resolve to deliver people-focused and sustainable infrastructure across the state.

The project is being executed through a partnership between the Benue State Government, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Gwer West Local Government Council. Upon completion, the facility will provide clean, safe and potable water to Naka and adjoining communities, offering a lasting solution to the long-standing water challenges in the area.

It was disclosed that desilting works on the dam will soon commence to enhance water capacity and ensure efficient reticulation. The government has also concluded plans to extend similar water projects to other parts of Gwer West, including Agagbe and Aondona, in line with its inclusive development agenda.

Stakeholders and residents of Gwer West have described the intervention as historic, noting that water scarcity, insecurity and poor road networks have remained major obstacles to development. The water treatment project is expected to significantly improve public health outcomes, sanitation and socio-economic activities.

The initiative further reflects the commitment of the Alia administration to rural development, even as efforts are intensified to address insecurity and facilitate the safe return of displaced persons to their ancestral homes.

The people of Gwer West have expressed appreciation to Governor Alia for his continued support, people-oriented policies and impactful projects, and have pledged unity and cooperation to ensure the sustainability of the project.

With this intervention, Gwer West is firmly positioned on the path of sustainable development, improved welfare and renewed hope.
