MOU BETWEEN COREN, COMEG AND CORBON ON 5TH JUNE 2025.

In a landmark move to strengthen regulation and foster greater collaboration in Nigeria’s construction and built environment sector, three major regulatory bodies—the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), and the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) on Thursday in Abuja signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening cooperation, synergy, and regulatory effectiveness.

The MoU was formally signed by Engr. Prof. Sadiq Z. Abubakar, FNSE, FAEng, Chairman of COREN Council; Chairman of CORBON, Engr. Bldr. Samson Ameh Opaluwah, PhD, FNIOB, FNIM, FAEng and the Registrar/CEO of COMEG, Engr. Bldr., Prof Zacheus.O. Opafunso; underscoring a united commitment to advancing best practices, harmonizing standards, and enhancing professional compliance across the built environment.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of COREN, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Z. Abubakar expressed optimism that the partnership will usher in a new era of operational bond and regulatory effectiveness stating, “This MoU is more than a ceremonial gesture – it is a bold, proactive commitment to safeguarding public interest by strengthening professional accountability and closing regulatory gaps in the industry.”

This historic agreement signals a new era of strategic alignment among the regulatory agencies, enabling them to pool resources, share intelligence, and coordinate enforcement mechanisms. The principal goal is to ensure that engineering, building, and geoscience practices in Nigeria not only meets global benchmarks but also responds effectively to the nation’s developmental challenges.

As renowned regulators in their respective domains, the trio emphasized that this MoU represents more than just a formal agreement—it is a proactive step towards building a stronger, safer, and more professionally accountable construction ecosystem through unified oversight and shared responsibilities.

Stakeholders across the construction industry have lauded the move, describing it as timely, visionary, and critical to eliminating duplication of roles, reducing regulatory gaps, and fostering sustainable development.

This tripartite collaboration is expected to set the pace for deeper institutional partnerships, greater regulatory clarity, and an improved environment for engineering and construction practice in Nigeria.

Present at the epoch-making event were: the Registrar of COREN Engr. Prof Okorie Austin Uche, FNSE, FNICE, the Registrar of CORBON, Bldr. Adetunji Adeniranmni as well as the Managing Director, Tectonics Engineering Group, Engr Aisha Kawu Gombe, PhD.
