FIC Report (Sokoto State) – The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has launched the Green Borders Initiative in Sokoto, a comprehensive program aimed at empowering women and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria’s borders communities.

Inaugurating the ceremony, the President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association and wife of the Comptroller-General, Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, said that the initiative would focus on women empowerment, environmental sustainability, sensitising mothers on the importance of vaccination against measles-rebulla and other childhood killer diseases. She described” immunisation and distribution of food items, starter packs, sewing and grinding machines to widows and vulnerable women as well as commissioning COWA offices and tree planting in border communities as a moral and social responsibility.”

At the Government House Sokoto, where she paid a courtesy call on the wife of the Sokoto state Governor, Hajiya Fatima Ahamed Aliyu, on Monday, 14th October, 2025, Mrs Adeniyi, stated that COWA is currently building a multi-purpose skills acquisition centre in Abuja, when completed it will serve as a national hub for vocational education and entrepreneurship, equipping thousands of women with income generating skills to promote inclusive growth. She called for a strong collaboration between COWA and the Sokoto State Government, particularly the office of the first lady to advance programme that will promote women’s empowerment, family welfare and environmental sustainability in border communities.

Responding, the wife of the Sokoto state Governor, Hajiya Fatima Ahamed Aliyu, commended COWA’s vision and pledged the Government’s support for the Green Borders sustainability initiative.
