Edo Govt Seeks Security Support to Protect Farmers

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Government has intensified efforts to safeguard farmers across the state by seeking stronger collaboration with security agencies. Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Jerry Uwangue, met with the State Commanders of the Department of State Services (DSS), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address growing concerns over attacks and kidnappings targeting farmers.

During the meeting, Dr. Uwangue highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to boosting agricultural productivity, noting recent investments in 30 tractors, five bulldozers, and 150 farm implements. He emphasized that ensuring the safety of farmers is crucial to sustaining the state’s food security efforts.

The security agencies assured the Commissioner of their full cooperation, promising enhanced intelligence sharing, surveillance, and protection for farmers and farmlands.

NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, also drew attention to the rising issue of drug abuse among youths and some farmers. He urged the state government to support interventions such as access to microfinance, improved seedlings, and other empowerment initiatives to curb the trend.

In appreciation of his commitment to the War Against Drug Abuse (WAADA), the NDLEA presented Dr. Uwangue with a special badge of honour.

The visit forms part of a broader strategy to deepen collaboration between the state government and security agencies, with the aim of creating a safer environment for farmers and strengthening food security in Edo State. Dr. Uwangue was accompanied by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, the Project Manager, and Directors of the ministry.
