Edo Post Office Revival: NUJ and NIPOST Forge Partnership for Community Enhancement

FIC Report (Edo State) –The Management of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) paid a courtesy visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the NUJ Secretariat on Monday, March 17th, 2025, where discussions centering on the revitalization of the long-neglected post office along Akpakpava Road took center stage. The meeting underscored a mutual desire to enhance Postal Services in the region while addressing significant challenges facing the Institution.

During the visit, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State NUJ, expressed deep concern about the ongoing deterioration of the Post Office, which was once considered a vibrant hub of social and economic activity. He lamented that the facility had sadly become a refuge for street urchins and touts who engage in various unsavory activities. “It is disheartening to see such an important institution dwindling into disrepair, ultimately affecting its reputation and service delivery,” Dr. Alenkhe stated emphatically. “We must come together to restore its glory and functionality.”

Acknowledging the challenges posed by technological advancements and the rise of internet communication, Dr. Alenkhe commended NIPOST’s persistent efforts to sustain its services amidst fierce competition. He underscored the cultural and historical significance of stamp collection, pledging that Edo State journalists would actively promote this tradition to ensure that future generations appreciate its value. “Stamp collection connects us to our roots and heritage. We have a responsibility to kindle this passion among the youth,” he emphasized.

In response, Mr. Augustine Aleburu, the Manager of NIPOST for the Edo State Territory, expressed enthusiasm for the proposed collaboration with the NUJ. He recognized the pivotal role that journalists play in enhancing public awareness and improving the perception of postal services. “Your platform as Media Professionals is vital for revitalizing our services and reaching the Community effectively,” he remarked. Aleburu also praised Dr. Alenkhe for the remarkable infrastructural advancements at the NUJ secretariat, noting it as a testament to his leadership.

The discussions marked a proactive approach by both organizations to address pressing local issues and explore collaborative opportunities that could lead to the improvement of postal services in Edo State. A partnership between NUJ and NIPOST is envisioned not only as a means of restoring the integrity of the postal service but also as a way to reinvigorate local cultural initiatives through various programs, including awareness campaigns and community engagement activities.

The NUJ and NIPOST representatives expressed optimism that this collaborative effort would pave the way for a brighter future for the postal service in Benin City, enveloped in a spirit of cultural revitalization and community service. The joint commitment demonstrates the dedication of both organizations to enhancing the quality of life for residents through efficient postal communications and the celebration of cultural heritage.
