The financing of education is a critical issue that requires the collective effort of all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and development partners.

Honourable Minister of State for Education, Hon. Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, emphasized this point at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) 2024 Global Response Activity: Capacity Building Workshop for Union Leaders held at De Silver Luxury Hotel, Gudu, Abuja.

Dr. Sununu emphasized the critical importance of investing in education to ensure its sustainability and improvement. He stated, “The financial health of the education sector directly impacts the quality of teaching and learning, and we must all commit to investing in the future of our children.”

Dr. Sununu also commended the NUT for its dedication to enhancing teacher professionalism and the ongoing efforts to review and update Nigeria’s educational curriculum to meet contemporary demands.

The Minister had highlighted the need for collective effort in financing education, setting the tone for the workshop.

Also speaking at the event, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, National President of the NUT, reiterated the urgent need for adequate funding of public education. He decried the commercialization of education and called for renewed government commitment to provide free, inclusive, and equitable quality public education for all Nigerian children.

Comrade Amba underscored that Nigeria’s education sector continues to face severe underfunding, leading to significant challenges, including a shortage of qualified teachers and the proliferation of unregulated private schools.

Both leaders called for increased collaboration between the government, development partners, and stakeholders to ensure that education remains a public good and that every child in Nigeria has access to quality education.
