The Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Project Office (EPO), Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako has emphasized the need for EPO’s ecological intervention strategy to focus on reducing environmental degradation while promoting international best practices that empower communities to thrive amidst changing climatic conditions.
Dr. Ndayako made this disclosure during a Stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the implementation of the recently approved Kano River Irrigation Project, held today, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
She noted that the project marked a significant step towards ecological sustainability and the harmonious coexistence of humans, animals, and the environment across the catchment areas. These areas include the Tiga Dam, Challawa Dam, Kafin Chiri Dam, covering 16 Local Government Areas in Kano South.
According to her, this intervention reflected a firm commitment to addressing pressing ecological challenges in Nigerian communities, which include, among other things, preventing environmental disasters—such as the recent Alau Dam,Maiduguri, incident—curbing unnecessary rural-urban migration, and promoting sustainable economic livelihoods, all in line with the dividends of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dr. Ndayako also revealed that the EPO had partnered with reputable international institutions like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority to adopt and implement global best practices. She stressed the importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources for future generations.
Highlighting the role of communities, Dr. Ndayako stated that the success of the initiative depended on active community engagement and ownership, noting that the most effective solutions often emerge from those directly impacted by environmental challenges.
She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and other critical stakeholders for their visionary and unwavering commitment to global ecological sustainability.
In her welcome address, the Director Special Duties, Mrs. Olufunke Esumobi, described the Kano River Irrigation Project as a timely and proactive response to the growing threat of water-related disasters. She added that the initiative is a critical investment in Nigeria’s agricultural productivity, food security, and the socio-economic well-being of local communities.
Mrs. Esumobi encouraged participants to engage constructively, share ideas, and contribute to the development of strategies that are not only technically sound but also socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable.
The event also featured syndicate sessions with consultants and contractors.
In attendance were the Senator representing Kano South, Senator AbdulRahman Kawu Sumaila, as well as directors and staff of the Ecological Project Office.
