FIC Report (Benue State) – The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and stability in Benue State following recent violent attacks that claimed numerous lives and displaced entire communities.
National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, made the declaration during a high-level condolence visit to Makurdi, on Tuesday, April 22nd 2025, where he met with Governor Hyacinth Alia and other key stakeholders. The visit was in response to escalating attacks across various communities in the state.
Speaking at the Government House, Ribadu, who led the presidential delegation, delivered President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s message of solidarity and assurance to the people of Benue.
“These are not just attacks on Benue; they are attacks on us all,” Ribadu stated. “We are here not just to mourn with you, but to reaffirm that you are not alone. The Federal Government stands ready to act decisively and bring a permanent end to this cycle of violence.”
He emphasized that Benue, known for its agricultural value as the Food Basket of the Nation, must be protected at all costs. Ribadu also praised Governor Alia’s proactive approach to governance and security and pledged full federal collaboration.
“Peace is not negotiable. We will work hand-in-hand with the state government to confront the evil threatening this land,” he said.
The NSA also addressed concerns about politicizing the conflict, cautioning individuals and groups to rise above political interests and instead focus on collective healing and lasting solutions.
In his remarks, Governor Alia expressed deep appreciation for the President’s concern and the delegation’s visit, which he described as a sign of renewed hope for the people of Benue. He acknowledged federal efforts so far but stressed the need for stronger measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safe return of displaced persons.
The governor also called for support in enforcing the state’s anti-open grazing law, which stakeholders believe is central to ending the protracted clashes between farmers and herders.
Traditional rulers and political leaders who spoke during the visit—including Ter Tyôshin, HRH Chief Daniel Abomtse; Ad’Agatu, Chief Godwin Onah; and Senator Emmanuel Udende—echoed the governor’s call. They urged the Federal Government to back the state’s legal frameworks with practical enforcement and logistical support.
Other members of the federal delegation included Senator Shehu Bubwa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security, and Senator Titus Zam representing Benue North-West.
