Federal Government Prioritizes Skills Development and Poverty Alleviation, Says Education Minister

The Honourable Minister of Education Prof Tahir Mamman OON SAN has reaffirmed the Federal Government commitment at enhancing skills development and reducing poverty nationwide.

This was made known at the inaugural Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Camp for female students at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

During the opening Ceremony, Dr. Mrs. Olodo Mujubat Adenike, Director of the Technology and Science Education Department, who represented the Hon Minister of Education emphasized that the Girls TVET Camp is part of a broader government strategy to tackle skills development challenges and poverty eradication. Then highlighted the government’s commitment to harnessing the technological potential of youth.

The Minister reiterated the importance of providing young women with practical skills essential for economic empowerment. Also noted that the Ministry has allocated both human and material resources to support girls’ education, stating that the TVET Camp effectively promotes skills acquisition, in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s Data, Out-of-School Technology, and Skill Acquisition (DOTS) policy.

In his address, Dr. Anietie Ikot, representing the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, remarked that the TVET initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to eliminate poverty and empower youth. He expressed confidence that these programs would significantly improve the lives of individuals and communities across Nigeria by enhancing access to quality education and vocational training.

Mrs. Ogungbemi P.O., Director/Principal of FSTC Uyo, stated that the TVET Camp for female students represents a crucial advancement in promoting gender equality in education and empowering women to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy. She highlighted the significance of hosting the program at FSTC Uyo, the only female federal science and technical college in Nigeria, as a fitting choice for this initiative.

The TVET Girls CAMP initiative originated from the passion for Technical and Science Education within the Science and Technology Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education. They proposed the idea to the Bank of Industry, which accepted the proposal, leading to the inaugural TVET Girls CAMP in Uyo 2024.
