Federal Ministry of Education Launches Reviewed Guidelines for School-Based Management Committees in Federal Unity Colleges

The Federal Ministry of Education has officially launched the Reviewed Guidelines for the Operations of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) in Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs). The event, held at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, was attended by key education stakeholders, including the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa; the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad; and commissioners of education from various states.

In his keynote address, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa emphasized the need for a democratic approach to school management in Federal Unity Colleges. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in reviewing and implementing operational guidelines that accommodate all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, students, and community representatives.

Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, in her remarks, described School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) as critical agents of transformation in the education sector. She noted that SBMCs strengthen schools by addressing individual and collective needs, promoting a holistic approach to school governance, and fostering community-driven development.

She further stressed that SBMCs play a vital role in tackling school challenges, improving bilateral relationships, and fostering stronger engagement among key stakeholders.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Katsina State, Hajiya Zainab Musawa, and the Chairperson of the SBMC, Hajiya Modibbo Kawu, also shared their perspectives on the initiative. They described the reviewed guidelines as timely and well-articulated, expressing optimism about their positive impact on the management and quality of education in Federal Unity Colleges.

This development is to reform the education sector as outlined in National Policy on Education, which emphasizes the importance of community based management.
