Abuja, Nigeria – October 10, 2024 – In a landmark move to enhance accountability and efficiency within the civil service, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment has officially launched its Performance Management System (PMS). This initiative, spearheaded by the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, aligns with the Civil Service Strategic Implementation Plan 2021-2025.
During the launch event, Permanent Secretary Amb. Nura Abba Rimi highlighted the transformative impact of the PMS on public service delivery. “This event marks a significant milestone in our commitment to implementing the Federal Civil Service Plan (FCSP). Our aim is to enhance performance, transparency, and accountability in governance, thereby improving service delivery across the ministry,” he stated.
The PMS is designed to provide a structured approach to performance evaluation, ensuring that individual contributions align with the ministry’s overarching goals. Amb. Rimi emphasized the system’s benefits, noting that it will lead to “improved productivity” and “enhanced employee success through regular feedback.”
Performance contracts have already been signed between the Permanent Secretary, directors, and heads of units, with appraisals under the new system already underway. This demonstrates the ministry’s dedication to continuous performance improvement.
Dr. Chinyere Akujobi, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and Team Lead of the PMS War Room at the Office of the Head of Service, commended the Ministry for its commitment to institutionalizing the PMS. She remarked, “The Head of Service is passionate about the PMS as it helps Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) plan and set targets. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a reinvigorated civil service, ultimately contributing to the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
A key feature of the PMS is the weekly performance review, held every Thursday, where staff members’ performance is assessed and improved upon. This initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for more effective governance, promoting a culture of accountability and high performance within the Ministry and service wide.
