The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako has assured the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, Ogun State of the Federal government efforts in preventing flooding in the country.
Dr. Salako stated this while receiving a delegation led by Engr. Olumuyiwa Idowu, FNSE, Chairman Abeokuta Branch recently in his office, Abuja.
The Minister noted that the Ministry is aware of most flooding locations in Ogun State and the need to carry out a comprehensive approach with the State Government in achieving permanent solution to flooding in the state.
Salako adviced the NSE Abeokuta Branch to engage the State Government in advocacy to address all the factors relating to flood in Ogun State.
The Minister also disclosed that the need to educate people on the danger of turning drainages and culverts to dump sites and the consequences of flooding as well as the benefits of tree planting.
Earlier, Engr. Olumuyiwa Idowu, FNSE, Chairman NSE, Abeokuta Branch in his opening remark briefed the Minister on their comprehensive flood assessment conducted in 33 locations in Abeokuta metropolis and Ilaro of Ogun State that are ravaged with flood due to indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainages.
Idowu called on the authorities for the holistic assessment of all critical infrastructures in Ogun State that are currently at the stage of collapsing.
He solicited for the Minister’s support for the full implementation of their assessment report that is before the Ogun State Government.
