FG Commends Partners In The Implementation Of National Anti-Corruption Action Plan

Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN delivering his Remarks at the meeting of the General Council of Bar, wednesday 29th November, 2023 at Abuja Continental hotel, Abuja.

The Honorable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN), has commended stakeholders and partners in the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption (NACS)Action plan.

The HAGF made the commendation while giving his welcome address at the opening of the Validation meeting of the National Anti -corruption Strategy (NACS) 2022- 2026 Action Plan, on Friday 26th July, 2024 in Abuja.

The meeting was to provide a platform for robust engagement by the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Heads of Anti- Corruption Agencies for the review and Validation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy(NACS)2022- 2O26 Action Plan.

Fagbemi commended the efforts put in by the stakeholders involved in the review of the NACS Action Plan, while thanking the donor partner; International (DEA)/ROLaC who he said have been part of the process from inception to date.

“Indeed your unwavering commitment, dedication and the financial support needed to midwife the successful implementation of the NACS Action Plan 2017 – 2021 and the review of the NACS Action Plan 2022- 2026 is highly appreciated.

“I therefore, request all participants to give your full attention to the overview of the draft NACS Action Plan, find the portion of the objectives and strategies relevant to your organization and resolve to fully implement the Action Plan to the best of your abilities”, he said.

Speaking earlier at the programme, Head of the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-corruption Reforms (TUGAR, Secretariat of the Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT), Mrs Jane Onwumere described the National anticorruption strategy as a self-assessment checklist of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) that Nigeria joined in 2009.

She noted that the meeting was would give life to the strategy document aimed at curbing corruption to the barest minimum.

“Notwithstanding the challenges, some progress was recorded evidenced in the passage of critical legislation such as the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, 2022, The Petroleum Industry Act 2021, the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 among others.

She added, “It is our expectation that the validation of the Action Plan and the establishment of the relevant implementation structures will ensure the full implementation of the Strategy”.
The height of the event was the presentation of the NACS document by the HAGF urging all implementing Agencies to adopt and implement all actions in the document.
Also present at the event were Chairman, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Director-General, National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Oniru, among other stakeholders.
