The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has handed over recovery items for the Internally Displaced Person’s in Maiduguri, Borno State, to the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Professor Babagana Zulum.
The recovery items comprised of : 75,600 pieces of clothing material for women: 72,000 pieces of clothing materials for men: 19,200 number of polythene mats and 19,200 number of blankets.
The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Nura Alkali, commended the government and the good people of Borno State for the resilience built over time that stood and subdued the unprecedented insurgency for a long time, particularly for providing good working relationship and partnership between Borno State and the Federal Government, in particular the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and its agencies.
Speaking further, she said “this shows the importance of President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort to ending the plight of the unfortunate victims (women and children) of the insurgency”.
“The President is solidly in support of bringing the insurgency to an end and returning the victims back to their lives and dignity”.
Continuing,” she noted that one of such projects is Mr. President’s approval for the purchase of Humanitarian Recovery Needs for the Internally Displaced Person’s in Borno State through the FMHADMSD in 2019 as a Federal Government Special Intervention Fund to purchase relief items for refugees from Cameron, Chad and Niger accommodated in twelve (12) camps namely: Monguno, Bakassi, Dalrori, Bama, Danboa,Banki, Mafa, Dikwa, Pulka, Muna, Ngala and Gwoza camps in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Minister said concerted efforts have been made to return these IDPs to their respective places of abode.
The Minister also drew the attention of the Executive Governor to the 2022 Season Climate Change Prediction released by NIMET on the impending flood, advising that steps should be taken inline with Sema, Frontline Local Government Authorities and Fire Service to mitigate possible flood and sensitise the people.
The Representative of the Governor of Borno State, the Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, while receiving the items on behalf of the Governor, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs for the Humanitarian support provided to the State Government during times of crises.
He said about Twenty (20) communities have been resettled back to their ancestral homes.
The Governor said the relief items came timely and assures that Sema will distribute the items inline with the instructions given by the Ministry. He further stated that the State will set up a mechanism to ensure that the items are given to the right people.
Present at the event were the Director Humanitarian Affairs, of the Ministry, Alhaji Ali Grema, Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Engr. Mohammed Kabir Wanori, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Abacha Umar Bukar Ngala and other dignitaries.
