The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has officially launched the Federal Tertiary Institutions Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP), a landmark innovation designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, and evidence-based governance across Nigeria’s tertiary education system. The launch, which held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters, Abuja, marks a decisive step toward modernizing higher education management, promoting data integrity, and rebuilding public trust through open access to institutional information.
In his keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Education, Chief Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa FAMedS, CON described the launch as “a major milestone in our collective journey to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.” He explained that the FTIGTP provides, for the first time, a unified national platform for accurate, real-time data on enrolment, funding, grants, and performance indicators across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. According to him, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by empowering citizens to track how resources are allocated and utilized, thereby strengthening accountability and fostering confidence in public institutions.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the FTIGTP is not merely a database but a reform tool designed to drive transparency, efficiency, and performance-based funding decisions. “For many years, data on tertiary education in Nigeria have been scattered and inconsistent. With the FTIGTP, we now have a single nationwide source of verified information to guide evidence-based policy, budgeting, and international collaboration,” he said. He further announced that all tertiary institutions must comply with mandatory annual data submission, noting that future government funding and interventions will be tied to transparency and accountability metrics.
The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmed, described the platform as a significant milestone in the Ministry’s digital transformation agenda. She stated that the FTIGTP will enhance data-driven governance, improve performance monitoring, and ensure effective decision-making. “The platform is a vital tool for achieving sustainable accountability and institutional efficiency. I encourage all tertiary institutions to fully utilise and regularly update the portal to ensure its sustainability and long-term impact,” she said.
In his goodwill message, the Former Minister of Aviation and Chancellor of the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, Mr. Osita Chidoka, commended the initiative as visionary and transformative. “This initiative is both visionary and consequential. It demonstrates how evidence-based activism can drive real government action. The Minister’s response to data, not emotion, reflects leadership that respects research and delivers tangible results,” he noted. Mr. Chidoka emphasized that transparency and consistent data reporting are essential for attracting international partnerships, donor funding, and improved policy outcomes, while urging greater investment in education and health to meet global benchmarks.
Speaking on behalf of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos and Chairman of the Committee, Professor Tanko Ishaya, lauded Dr. Alausa’s leadership in promoting accountability and openness. He expressed the commitment of Vice-Chancellors to fully adopt and support the platform, noting that many universities have already begun publishing data online to foster transparency.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Committee of Rectors of Polytechnics, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar, applauded the Ministry’s consistent reforms and reaffirmed the readiness of Rectors and to support the initiative. He said, “Whenever we hear about transformation under this administration, we know it is genuine. We reaffirm our readiness to support this initiative fully.” The Chairman of the Committee of Provosts, Dr. Adamu Ali, also described the platform as a laudable innovation that will enhance academic quality, strengthen institutional administration, and advance national development.
The Coordinator of the Nigerian Education Data Initiative (NEDI), Mr. Isah Abubakar, demonstrated the platform’s functionality, highlighting its ability to provide real-time access to data on student enrolment, budget allocations, research grants, TETFund allocations, NELFund interventions, and institutional performance indicators through the portal accessible at transparency.education.gov.ng.
The official launch of FTIGTP , by Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring integrity, innovation, and excellence in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. It is a bold step toward rebuilding public trust, ensuring accountability, and positioning Nigerian tertiary education as globally competitive.
