Following a fire incident which affected some parts of the Cattle Market at Umuchieze, Umunneochi LGA in the early hours of Friday last week, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu visited Market to see things for himself and commiserate with the traders, who are mostly Hausas.
He was met on arrival at the market located along the Enugu – PH Highway by the Honorable Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rt Hon. Cosmos Ndukwe who led him into the market.
Member representing Umunneochi State Constituency at the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Okey Igwe, Honorable Commissioners for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, Homeland Security, Chief Dan Okoli, Women Affairs, Chief Mrs Ukachi Amala, and Youths and Sports, Emeka Ikwuagwu, were also part of the visit.
The Governor condoled with the traders and thanked God that no lives were lost. He pledged the assistance of the State Government in helping rebuild the market and urged the traders to exercise lots of caution especially this dry season.
He pledged the commitment of his administration to the setting up of Fire Service Stations in the three Senatorial Zones and stated that a Sanitation Task Force will be set up in the market to aid the enforcement of sanitation standards.
He directed the Commissioner for Trade and Investment and Chairman of Umunneochi LGA, Engr Matthew Ibe to bring the Market Leaders to Government House for discussions on how the assistance from Government will be channeled. He also requested the House of Assembly member to accompany them.
