First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tunibu, has officially commissioned a resettlement city in Keffi, Nasarawa State, designed to provide a new home for Persons of Concern.

The resettlement city, which has been named after the first lady, comprised of 40 households with a total of 239 individuals from North East Nigeria, Cameroon, South Sudan, and Central Africa, who are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees.

The facility was built by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and was dedicated to First lady by the Federal Commissioner (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed.

Speaking in Keffi, Nasarawa State on Saturday, the first lady urged residents to be law-abiding and assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR is committed to ensuring the well-being and dignity of all Nigerians.

In a gesture to alleviate their plight, Senator Oluremi Tinubu donated 400 bags of 25kg rice, 1,200 pieces of Ankara fabric, and 600 pieces of national fabric to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the area.

The First Lady expressed her delight in the efforts to empower the occupants, citing the allocation of 100 hectares of farmland for the families to cultivate for food and income. She also welcomed the provision of essential facilities in the resettlement city, including greenhouses, vocational training centers, a police station, a church, a mosque, and a clinic, which she believes will facilitate the families’ integration and independence.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu commended the host community, Yar Kande, for their warm hospitality and reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of ensuring that all Nigerians live in a dignified environment, have access to education, and contribute productively to society, thereby renewing their hope for a better future.

In his remarks the Hon. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, assured the residents that their voices have been heard and their concerns are being addressed. He promised that the federal government would replicate the resettlement city across the country to bring hope to children, women, and the entire nation.

Minister commended the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, for generously providing the land and facilitating the integration of the resettled individuals.

In a goodwill massage, the Former Federal Commissioner, (NCFRMI) Hon. Bashir Garba Lado, Chairman House Committee on Senate Matters, disclosed that he is privileged to lay the foundation stone for resettlement cities in Kano, Katsina and Borno state.

A reflection of our belief that every Nigerian deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity. I am proud that this effort has been sustained and expanded by my successors.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Honourable Federal Commissioner, Ahmed, highlighted the features of the newly established resettlement city, which includes:

  • A solar-powered greenhouse to boost food security and support agricultural livelihoods
  • A fully equipped hospital to cater to the health and physical needs of residents
  • A modern school providing inclusive basic education
  • A skills acquisition centre to empower residents with market-relevant skills for economic independence
  • A place of worship for all, featuring both a mosque and a church to promote spiritual well-being and communal harmony
  • Over 40 blocks of well-constructed flats offering safe, decent, and dignified housing for residents.

Ahmed noted that these facilities will not only provide a place for people to live but also create a thriving community where families can rebuild their lives and contribute to the country’s development.

“The resettlement city has already provided a new home for 40 households, comprising 239 individuals, including refugees from Cameroon, South Sudan, and Central Africa.” He added.
