FIC Report (Kaduna State) – The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna (FNPH Kaduna), has been commended as a tested and trusted partner in the Kaduna State Government’s efforts to expand access to quality mental healthcare across all 23 local government areas of the state.
The Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani made the commendation through his Deputy, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, during the 2025 World Mental Health Day celebration held at the hospital. The event, themed Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies, brought together stakeholders in the health sector, development partners, and mental health advocates.
Dr Balarabe noted that mental healthcare, once limited to tertiary institutions, has now been effectively integrated into secondary and primary healthcare levels across Kaduna State.
She attributed this achievement to the strong technical collaboration and material support provided by FNPH Kaduna.
The Deputy Governor also commended Professor Aishatu Yusha’u Armiya’u, the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, for her impeccable leadership, professionalism, and dedication, which continue to stand as an example of excellence.
Sabuwa described Professor Armiya’u as a leader who embodies skill, vision, and heart, adding that she is not only delivering results but also inspiring confidence in the healthcare system and making women professionals proud as a remarkable role model.
Dr Balarabe further described experts from the hospital as the backbone of the silent revolution currently transforming the state’s healthcare system and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the institution in the years ahead.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Hajia Umma Kaltume Ahmed, represented by Dr Jonathan G. Gajere, described FNPH Kaduna as an oasis of hope at a time when psychiatric medicine faces increasing challenges. She commended the hospital’s leadership and staff for their dedication to improving mental health outcomes in the state.
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the Africa Centres for Disease Control (Africa CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), Society for Family Health (SFH), Prof Chris Kwaja, Special Envoy on Peace and Security to the Plateau State Governor, and the Kaduna State Drug, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (KADSAMHSA).
The Deputy Governor later joined other dignitaries to present certificates to newly trained Mental, Gender, and Adolescent Health Practitioners, acknowledging FNPH Kaduna’s role in building human capacity for mental health service delivery.
The celebration also featured the hospital’s signature Catch Them Young initiative, which engaged students from selected secondary schools in an inter-school quiz competition and creative presentations on curbing social media addiction. The students were honoured with certificates and cash prizes for their outstanding performance.
