FRSC Launches Safety Initiative to Curb Rising Truck Accidents in Edo

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a comprehensive Safety Initiative aimed at promoting responsible driving, proper Cargo handling, and Infrastructural support. The move comes amid growing concerns over the alarming increase in crashes involving heavy-duty Vehicles, which have been responsible for Injuries, Fatalities, and Economic losses in the region.

At a pivotal town hall meeting held on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, in Benin City, the Edo State Sector Commander of FRSC, Cyril Mathew, emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach. “Our goal is to significantly reduce the rate of Accidents involving Tankers and Trailers through targeted interventions, Stakeholder engagement, and enforcement of Safety regulations,” he declared.

Themed “Safe Loading and Driving of Tankers and Trailers in Edo State,” the meeting drew participation from key Industry Players and Government Agencies, including Comrade Matthew Ogbomo, Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Edo Chapter; the Chairman of the Edo State Tipper Association; Representatives Of Federal Fire Service; Representatives of Special Marshals, Zone 8 Commander, and Members of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDTSMA).

During the discussion, Cyril Mathew underscored the crucial role of qualified and experienced drivers. He urged licensing authorities, notably NUPENG and PTD, to enforce stringent licensing standards, ensuring only well-trained Drivers operate Tankers, especially those transporting hazardous petroleum products. “Proper licensing and experience are vital in preventing avoidable accidents,” he stressed.

The FRSC boss highlighted ongoing efforts such as routine Vehicle Inspections at loading points and freight terminals, where trucks are checked for roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards before they hit the road. He also advised dry cargo drivers to ensure their loads are securely latched and to avoid transporting humans or animals alongside cargo, practices that can increase Accident risks.

Furthermore, Cyril Mathew called for consistent driver training and emphasized that the FRSC remains committed to supporting drivers through education and enforcement. “Our regular road audits help identify hazardous spots, and we relay these reports to relevant authorities for prompt action,” he explained.

Acknowledging that road conditions significantly influence safety, the Sector Commander appealed to the Federal Government to undertake more infrastructural repairs. “Many dangerous potholes and poorly marked sections pose serious threats to drivers, especially in high-traffic zones,” he noted. He urged increased Government palliative measures to repair and maintain roads, which would complement safety efforts and reduce Accidents.

During the meeting, Drivers and other Stakeholders expressed their support for the initiative but also highlighted the need for greater collaboration. They appealed for more frequent maintenance of roads and increased enforcement of Safety regulations. The drivers also called for more training opportunities to enhance their skills and understanding of safe loading and driving practices.

Cyril Mathew assured all present of the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to road safety. “We will continue working hand-in-hand with Drivers, Government Agencies, and the Community to make Edo roads safer for Everyone,” he affirmed.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant step in Edo State’s concerted effort to reduce Truck and Trailer Accidents. By combining Enforcement, Driver Education, Infrastructural Improvements, and Stakeholder Engagement, the FRSC aims to create a safer Transportation Environment—saving Lives, protecting Property, and fostering Economic Growth.

As Edo State takes proactive measures, it sets an example for other regions grappling with similar challenges, demonstrating that safety is a shared responsibility requiring continuous commitment and collaboration.
