Governor Alex Otti Moves To Protect NIPOST Assets, Highlights Federal Significance Of Postal Services

FIC Report (Abia State) – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the surveying and restoration of all lands belonging to the Nigerian Postal Service across the state, underscoring the critical federal role of the postal system as a national infrastructure for communication, commerce, and governance.

Governor Otti issued the directive while receiving the Abia State Postal Manager, Mrs. Winifred Amadi, noting that the protection of NIPOST properties is not only a state responsibility but a matter of safeguarding a vital federal institution.

He emphasized that the post office, as a federal agency, remains one of the most far-reaching arms of government, with presence in virtually every Local Government Area, serving as a backbone for official communication, logistics, financial inclusion, and grassroots connectivity across Nigeria.

According to the Governor, preserving NIPOST assets is essential to maintaining the integrity of federal infrastructure that supports national unity, administrative efficiency, and economic activities, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Governor Otti described encroachment on postal lands as illegal and detrimental to federal operations, directing immediate intervention to resolve the reported case at Item in Bende LGA and prevent similar occurrences statewide.
“Whether it is Federal or State, it is still one government,” the Governor stated, stressing the need for intergovernmental collaboration to strengthen public service delivery.

He further highlighted that NIPOST’s strategic nationwide network positions it as a key driver of e-commerce, logistics, and governmental correspondence, urging the agency to optimize its operations into a more efficient and revenue-generating system in line with global best practices.
The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s willingness to collaborate with NIPOST, particularly in leveraging its Express Mail Service (EMS) for official logistics and promoting Abia State through commemorative postal stamps,an initiative that aligns with NIPOST’s federal mandate of projecting Nigeria’s identity globally.

Earlier, Mrs. Amadi appealed for government intervention to halt encroachment on postal lands, stressing that such actions disrupt the operations of a critical federal agency tasked with delivering essential services to citizens.

She reiterated NIPOST’s readiness to partner with the Abia State Government in enhancing service delivery, noting that the agency remains a pivotal institution for national communication, trade facilitation, and cultural promotion.
The meeting was attended by key government officials, including the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and other senior aides.
