FIC Report (Benue State) – The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Thursday, June 12, 2025, in Makurdi the Benue State capital joined Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day with a heartfelt tribute to the heroes and martyrs of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

Governor Alia noted that democracy is not merely a system of governance but a living force powered by the voices of the people, the courage of leaders, and the sacrifice of martyrs. “Democracy is the right to choose, the freedom to speak, and the sacred duty to build. It is not a gift from the powerful, but a legacy built by the brave,” he said.

He paid tribute to Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, election—a poll he described as unifying and historic. He also honoured other national heroes including Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, and countless unnamed citizens who stood firm for truth, justice, and freedom.

Governor Alia also recognized the sacrifices of Benue indigenes in the democratic journey. He celebrated Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu, the second Executive Governor of Benue State, as a visionary leader who proved that faith and politics can align in service of the people. He praised Senator Iyorchia Ayu and other patriotic sons and daughters of Benue for their unwavering dedication to democratic ideals. He further acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, for his present leadership.

The governor commended the Buhari administration for designating June 12 as Democracy Day and appreciated President Tinubu for upholding and deepening democratic principles.

Speaking on the progress of democracy in Benue State under his leadership, Governor Alia noted:

  1. Improved Security: Relative peace has returned to previously troubled areas through collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders, though full resettlement remains a goal.
  2. Wage Justice: Salaries and pensions long owed are being paid, affirming the principle that a worker deserves his wage.
  3. Agricultural Support: Farmer empowerment programmes have been launched to revive Benue’s agrarian economy.
  4. Infrastructure Renewal: Roads, schools, and hospitals across the state are being rehabilitated and upgraded.
  5. Support for Displaced Persons: Displaced citizens are being assisted with care, dignity, and reintegration strategies.
  6. Youth Empowerment: Initiatives are creating jobs, building skills, and igniting hope for the younger generation.

Looking ahead, the governor unveiled plans to:

Launch agro-industrial hubs to process local produce and stimulate the economy.

Improve road connectivity to drive rural commercial growth.

Expand support for MSMEs, women-led businesses, and tech innovations.

Ensure health insurance coverage for all Benue citizens.

Promote transparent and tech-driven governance to ensure efficient public spending.

He called on all Benue people—at home and in the diaspora—to unite in purpose and action. He also thanked security operatives, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and everyday citizens for their roles in fostering peace and stability.

Governor Alia reaffirmed his dedication to serving with humility, integrity, and results. He urged citizens to celebrate Democracy Day with joy, thoughtful reflection, and renewed commitment to building a greater Benue and a stronger Nigeria.
