Governor Alia Renews Strong Call for State Police at NUJ Congress

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has once again reiterated his call for the establishment of State Police in Nigeria, emphasizing that the current centralized policing structure has failed to adequately address the persistent security challenges facing the country, especially in Benue State.

Speaking through his Technical Advisor on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communications, Hon. Solomon Iorpev, during the monthly congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, Hon. Iorpev stressed that a decentralized, locally managed police force is essential for effective security operations, intelligence gathering, and community accountability.

“The current security architecture has not proven sufficient in curbing the incessant attacks on our communities,” he stated.
“It is time for Nigeria to embrace State Police as a practical and necessary step toward ending insecurity in the regions.”

He also highlighted the numerous infrastructural strides recorded by the Alia-led administration within just two years in office, positioning the state on a path of steady development.

During the congress, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, lamented the lack of direct interaction between the media community and the Governor. He appealed for an open channel of communication and engagement.

In his remarks, Comrade Chris Atsaka emphasized the need for regular interface between the state government and media practitioners, noting that previous administrations had sustained such engagements.

Supporting the call, Terdzungwe Uwua urged better collaboration between the Chief Press Secretary, the Technical Advisor on Media, and the NUJ for the growth and development of the union and the state at large.
