FIC Report (Plateau State) – The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has addressed the public regarding a bomb scare that caused panic in Jos this morning. In a press release on the 12th November, 2024, he clarified that there were rumors of an explosion at the Terminus Market, behind the old Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
He said the scare began when a group of concerned citizens reported a suspicious pile of polythene bags, mistaking them for an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Adding that this report led to widespread panic among market-goers and residents in the area which prompted the swift intervention of the security forces, including the anti-bomb squad from the Plateau State Police Command. They carried out a comprehensive cordon and search operation, which revealed no evidence of explosives.
The Governor commended the citizens for their quick response in raising an alarm, emphasizing the importance of community awareness in preventing potential disasters. He encouraged residents to continue being vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or comments to the authorities. By doing so, we can effectively avert any potential threats, he stated.
Furthermore, Governor Mutfwang highlighted the role of social media in spreading such rumors, warning that irresponsible use could lead to public unrest and destabilization. He urged everyone to exercise caution in their social media interactions, stressing the need for responsible management of information shared online.
We must be careful with how we use social media, the governor advised. It has the power to cause conflicts if misused, so let us all take responsibility in managing it wisely, he said.
The Governor concluded by reassuring the public that the security situation in Jos is under control and encouraged everyone to go about their daily activities with confidence, while remaining alert to their surroundings.
