FIC Report (Delta State) – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated journalists in the country as they mark 70 years of the existence of NUJ as a professional Union and also for maintaining highest ethical standard in the exercise of their constitutionally enshrined duty as members of the 4th Estate of the Realm.
The Governor’s congratulatory message is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Oborevwori, Sir. Festus Ahon.
The Governor congratulated the National President of NUJ, Alhassan Yahaya and the entire journalists in the country, noting that the Press in Nigeria has been a strong pillar in the sustainability of democratic governance in Nigeria since 1999.
The Governor noted that 70 years of the establishment of NUJ as the umbrella Union that controls the affairs of journalists in the country was not an easy one pointing out that a man at 70 years is no longer a baby. He specifically, appreciated journalists in Delta State for upholding the ethical standard in journalism practice, stressing that the Union is really living up to its ethical values of fairness, truth, objective and balanced reportage.
The Governor observed that the 70 years of NUJ in the country has gone a long way in promoting professionalism among journalists in the course of carrying out the three key functions of the media namely; informing, educating and entertaining the public.
He added that NUJ has continued to monitor the conduct of its members while adding that the press has contributed immensely to the sustainable development of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
