Gufwan Commends Federal University Lafia, For It’s Commitment To Inclusive Education, Empowerment Of Students With Disabilities

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commended the Federal University, Lafia, for its unwavering commitment to inclusive education and empowerment of students with disabilities in the institution.

While expressing his appreciation for the institution’s outstanding support to students with disabilities following
the institution’s progressive policies and resolve to support students with disabilities and set a remarkable standard for higher inclusive education in Nigeria he said the gesture will encourage students with disabilities to achieve higher education.

The Executive Secretary particularly hailed the Vice Chancellor and management of the institution for the enviable feat of inculcating disability-inclusive initiatives by the institution and called on other institutions of higher learning to emulate the university if they are yet to.

He further said the institution is being appreciated by the Commission on the following exemplary undertakings:

  1. A 75% subsidy on student fees and charges, stating that the bold and compassionate policy has significantly reduced financial burdens and barriers for students with disabilities, thereby enabling access to quality education at all levels;
  2. Special admission policy with 2% reservation, which by implication, means that by institutionalising a dedicated quota for candidates with special needs, Federal University, Lafia has demonstrated leadership in promoting equity and inclusive academic opportunities;
  3. Establishment of the Center for Disability Studies: Stating that the creation of the Center is a visionary step towards advancing disability issues and inclusion in Nigeria, while fostering research, training and advocacy in disability matters;
  4. Special hostel allocation, which provides accessible accommodation for students with special needs, reflecting the institution’s deep understanding of the importance of dignity, safety and comfort in student life; and finally,
  5. Regular engagement with students with special needs, implying that the institution’s commitment to dialogue and inclusion ensures that the voices of students with disabilities are heard, respected and integrated into the university’s development agenda.

The Executive Secretary noted that the initiative not only align with the National Policy on Inclusive Education (2024) Revised, national goals of social inclusion and poverty reduction, but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for other institutions across the country.

Gufwan stated further that the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities looks forward to deepening collaboration with Federal University, Lafia, in advancing inclusive education and creating sustainable pathways for Persons with Disabilities to thrive.

According to him, based on the commendable feat of the institution, he is calling on the Vice Chancellor to serve as an ambassador for championing similar initiatives in other universities in the country.
