Chief Ayuba Gufwan, the Executive Secretary National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), visited the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) in Abuja today, 31st October, 2024.
During the visit, he emphasized the critical role of data in achieving meaningful advocacy and inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Reflecting on his personal journey, Chief Gufwan shared that CBM played an instrumental role in his educational success, describing his connection to the Mission as “divine.”
Chief Gufwan expressed concern about the challenges faced due to unverified data, specifically the reported figure of 35.5 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria. He highlighted the urgent need for accurate data collection across various disability clusters and gender groups to support inclusive policies.
“Our struggle for inclusivity is holistic, and data accuracy is essential to achieve this goal,” he stated.
In his commitment to expanding the partnership with CBM, Chief Gufwan expressed eagerness to deepen the collaboration, seeking greater support from CBM to enhance opportunities and resources for PWDs.
“I am willing to ask for more at any given opportunity for the benefit of persons with disabilities,” he added, reaffirming his dedication to improving the lives of PWDs in Nigeria.
Mr. Abdulaziz Musa, Country Director of CBM, responded enthusiastically, emphasizing the organization’s alignment with NCPWD’s objectives.
“The success of the Commission is the success of CBM,” Musa said. He underscored the importance of fully implementing the Disability Act as a safety net that enables CBM to support the Commission in executing its strategic plans.
Mr. Musa also highlighted the role of transparency and open communication in fostering support and reducing the stigma faced by PWDs.
Additionally, the representative from the World Bank to the Commission, Dr. Adebukola Adebayo underscored the importance of capacity building and sectoral coordination. He encouraged CBM to support the Commission in developing robust capacity structures to further its mission.
“Working together to build sustainable structures and align priorities will enhance the impact of our efforts to address the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities,” he noted.
The visit marks a significant step in strengthening the partnership between the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and the Christian Blind Mission, as both organizations work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for PWDs in Nigeria.
