Residents of Umuobia Housing Estate, Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State, have appealed to the State government to come to their aid over erosion menace threatening lives and property in the area.
The residents including, Mrs Ndidi Nwosu and Prof. Chris Chinaka who made the call while conducting Newsmen round the gully erosion site, said if urgent steps were not taken by The government through interventions, erosion will sack residents who are predominantly retired civil servants.
According to Mrs Nwosu and Prof. Chinaka, over three buildings have already been pulled down by the gully erosion, which they attributed to incessant flooding in the area caused by the dilapidated condition of roads that lead to the Umuobia Housing Estate.
The residents called on the listening Governor of the State , Dr Alex Otti, to come to their aids and save them from further losing their houses to the gully.
Also speaking, Mr Gilbert Nkenna, whose house has been damaged by the gully erosion, stressed the need for government intervention in rehabilitating the gully, pointing out that he has been rendered homeless as a result of the gully which has deteriorated over time.
Mr. Nkenna explained that the gully erosion cannot be combated by residents as they don’t have the finance to embark on such venture.
