Honourable Minister Of Education Inaugurates National EDTECH Strategy To Drive Nigeria’s Digital Learning Transformation

In a landmark move to modernize Nigeria’s education system and expand access to quality learning through technology, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, recently inaugurated Nigeria’s first National Educational Technology (EdTech) Strategy. The launch event, jointly convened by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, was held in partnership with leading international development partners.

Describing the initiative as a pivotal milestone in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s education landscape, Dr. Alausa underscored its alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He affirmed that the strategy represents the first phase of a broader digital education blueprint aimed at leveraging technology to reduce learning gaps, particularly among out-of-school children and underserved communities.

“This is a defining moment for our nation,” the Minister stated. “It signals a national commitment to harnessing digital innovation to provide equitable, high-quality education to all learners and to equip our youth with the skills needed for the future.”

The National EdTech Strategy, he explained, will serve as a structured framework to regulate digital content, expand learning pathways, and strengthen the quality of education delivery across the country. The Minister emphasized the strategy’s focus on improving teacher training, promoting inclusive learning, and fostering digital competencies to prepare Nigerian students for a rapidly evolving global economy.

As part of the launch, Dr. Alausa also inaugurated a Technical Working Group to lead the implementation of the strategy. The committee has been tasked with conducting technical assessments, proposing strategic priorities, designing context-driven solutions, and supporting the development of a resilient, sustainable EdTech ecosystem in Nigeria.

In her remarks, Mrs. Zainab Abubakar Suleiman, Director of ICT at the Federal Ministry of Education, highlighted the urgency of reforming the education sector through technology. She noted that millions of Nigerian children have been left behind in traditional learning systems, and emphasized that the strategy aims to ensure equitable access to digital learning, strengthen the resilience of education systems, and nurture the digital skills of Nigeria’s youth.

“Technology amplifies both challenges and opportunities,” Mrs. Suleiman noted. “This strategy will enable us to harness digital tools for inclusive, effective, and scalable learning.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Abubakar Isa, Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister on EdTech, described the launch as a bold and necessary intervention, not merely a symbolic event.

“This is a transformative step toward salvaging the future of education in Nigeria. Under Dr. Alausa’s visionary leadership, we are confident in the successful implementation of this strategy,” he said.

The inauguration drew participation from key stakeholders including UNESCO, the World Bank, FCDO, TETFund, UBEC, NUC, and JAMB, reflecting a strong multi-sectoral commitment to educational reform.

The National EdTech Strategy marks a major step forward in Nigeria’s efforts to deliver inclusive, future-ready, and technology-enabled learning opportunities. It reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the tools and opportunities to thrive in the digital age.
