House of Reps approves President Tinubu’s request for the state of emergency declaration in Rivers State

The House of Representatives on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at its plenary in decisive votes approved the request of President Ahmed Tinubu for a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The House however adjusted the request.

The House resolved that the president could review the declaration at any time without necessarily waiting for the six months prescribed in the proclamation if there were signs of crisis resolution.

The House also amended the request to include the setting up of a National Reconciliation Committee made up of members of the Executive, the Legislature, and eminent Nigerians to bring the conflicting parties to the table.

In addition, the National Assembly is to take over legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly in line with the provisions of section 11(4) of the constitution.
