IMO AT 50: Shettima Applauds State's Legacy, Assures Of Stronger Federal Support

FIC Report (Imo State) – The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, has commended Imo State for its outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s political, cultural and economic development over the past 50 years, assuring the state of increased Federal Government support as it enters a new phase of growth.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Imo State, the Vice President conveyed the goodwill message of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, describing Imo as a strategic partner in national development, endowed with rich human capital, creative excellence and strong agricultural potential.

Senator Shettima particularly praised Governor Hope Uzodimma, CON, whom he described as a “game-changing revolutionary,” noting that his administration has restored discipline, strategic planning and institutional strength to governance in the state.

According to him, “Governor Uzodimma has demonstrated that governance is a serious responsibility anchored on planning, reform and accountability. Under his leadership, Imo State has regained confidence, stability and relevance in national affairs.”

Reflecting briefly on Imo State’s leadership heritage, the Vice President acknowledged the foundational roles of past governors, including the late Sam Mbakwe and former Governor Rochas Okorocha, for their respective contributions to the political and socio-economic evolution of the state.

The Vice President further highlighted Imo State’s strengths in education, agriculture, commerce and emerging sectors such as oil and gas, tourism, renewable energy and the digital economy, stressing that peace and security remain vital drivers of sustainable development. He urged the state to leverage the golden jubilee as a springboard for renewed unity, innovation, disciplined governance and people-oriented leadership.

Earlier, Governor Uzodimma described the creation of Imo State in 1976 as a defining moment of freedom and identity, expressing gratitude to God for sustaining the state for five decades. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unity, digital transformation and accelerated development.

Chairman of the occasion and former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, CFR, commended the governor for impactful projects across key sectors, describing the administration’s achievements as a worthy contribution to national development.

The celebration attracted dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, political leaders and stakeholders, who prayed for sustained peace, unity and progress in Imo State and Nigeria.
