FIC Report (Edo State) – As the festive season approaches, Road Safety Officials in Edo State have raised alarms over a significant rise in road traffic crashes, attributing the spike to driver distractions.
The call was articulated during a recent town hall meeting to kick off the Safety Campaign Themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.” The Sector Commander of Edo FRSC, Cyril Mathew, explained that the statistics show a troubling increase in traffic violations linked to distractions.
Mathew pointed out that the ember months are traditionally associated with increased road traffic and, regrettably, a rise in road traffic crashes. He urged motorists to exercise caution and maintain focus on the road. “When you’re behind the wheel, your main responsibility is to stay alert and avoid activities that divert your attention,” he urged.
To promote safety, the FRSC has actively engaged in various educational and outreach programs, including press conferences, community engagements, and motorcade rallies to reinforce the message of responsible driving. Mathew emphasized the importance of collective effort, stating, “We must work collaboratively as citizens to champion this cause.”
In his remarks, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, through his Chief of Staff Gani Audu, acknowledged the worrying spike in road traffic crashes during the ember months, which often result in injuries and fatalities. He underscored that most of these accidents are preventable and are often caused by factors such as distracted driving. “Many drivers now make calls, reply to texts, browse social media, eat, or adjust controls while the vehicle is in motion. These actions are dangerous and can be avoided,” he warned.
Governor Okpebholo called on all road users, particularly drivers and passengers, to take personal responsibility for safety and to be vigilant at all times. He urged everyone to be conscious of their role in preventing accidents and ensuring a safer environment for all.
In a show of solidarity, the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbanika, represented by ASP Idemudia Madalin, assured the FRSC of continued partnership in efforts to reduce road traffic crashes. Other key stakeholders, including the Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Edo State Traffic Management Agency, also pledged their support for the campaign, emphasizing a collective commitment to safer roads during the ember months.
As the campaign kicks into high gear, authorities and stakeholders remain resolute in their message: road safety is a shared responsibility that requires vigilance, discipline, and proactive measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all.
