INEC, Security Agencies, NAPTIP Call For Active Citizen Participation, Voters Registration, And Security Consciousness

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on members of the public to actively participate in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise across the 23 Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Professor Sam Egwa, represented by Achigili Samuel, made this call on Thursday, 4th September 2025, during a one-day town hall meeting on National Enlightenment Campaign on the Nigerian Identity Project and National Symbols, organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Makurdi.

Egwa noted that registration is still ongoing at INEC’s offices in the 23 Local Government Areas and at the state office. He emphasized that eligibility criteria include being a Nigerian, 18 years and above, and registering only in the location where one intends to vote. He further explained that the exercise covers new registration, transfer, replacement of lost or defaced cards, and correction of names and dates of birth—all free of charge.

Also speaking, the Zonal Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Zone 8, ACG Solomon Iyamu, represented by Deputy Commandant Theresa Toryila, stressed that insecurity not only disrupts learning in schools but also erodes community values, discourages civic participation, and increases vulnerability to natural hazards. He highlighted the need for a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach to tackle these challenges.

Iyamu commended the efforts of the Agro Rangers unit, which has worked tirelessly to protect farmers and ensure agricultural activities—the backbone of Benue’s economy—continue without fear. He added that in collaboration with disaster management agencies, NSCDC has also responded to flooding incidents to safeguard displaced persons and their livelihoods.

He urged participants to adopt practical resolutions that will strengthen synergy between security, value re-orientation, and citizen participation.

On his part, Mr. Hua Tersoo Yusuf, Head of Research and Programme Development Unit (RPD), NAPTIP Makurdi, speaking on behalf of the Zonal Command, noted that NAPTIP’s mandate to combat human trafficking and related offenses is greatly enhanced by citizens’ vigilance. He raised concern over new disturbing trends in human trafficking, including body stealing and child defilement, stressing that these crimes not only rob children of their innocence but also threaten the fabric of society.

Yusuf urged Nigerians to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities, emphasizing that enhanced security awareness is key to preventing such crimes.
