Kano State Government Assures Prompt Payment of Boarding Schools’ Food Suppliers

FIC Report (Kano State) – The Kano State Government (KNSG) has reaffirmed its commitment to the prompt payment of foodstuff suppliers for the 39 boarding schools across the state. Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, the Commissioner for Education, made this declaration during an interactive meeting with school principals and contractors held at the Ministry’s Conference Hall. He emphasized the administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of students through a robust school feeding program.

According to Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education, the meeting served as an avenue for reviewing the progress and challenges of the school feeding initiative. In a press statement, he highlighted that the Ministry remains focused on ensuring transparency and efficiency in the feeding program.

Dr. Makoda stated that under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, significant strides have been made in improving the quality and quantity of meals provided in boarding schools. One notable achievement is the 82% increase in the food price rate, from N787.8 to N1,430.88 per student. He assured contractors that once their supplies are verified, payments would be processed without delay, urging them to adhere strictly to their contractual agreements.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on the schools feeding program, Alhaji Umar Musa Gama, praised the Governor’s commitment to overhauling the education sector, noting that the food price review reflects the administration’s dedication to addressing inflation and improving students’ welfare.

Additionally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad, noted that despite rising food prices, the government has remained responsive to the contractors’ needs, ensuring a seamless feeding program. He also revealed plans to enhance the system for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Contractors, represented by Alhaji Uba Magayaki, expressed their gratitude to the Governor for prioritizing education and assured the government of their dedication to delivering high-quality food as stipulated in their agreements.

The Ministry of Education, which oversees seven agencies, currently manages 39 boarding schools in Kano State—30 for boys and 9 for girls.
