Lagos Agency Arrests 25 for Illegal Waste Dumping

FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Lagos State Government, in alignment with the federal ministry of environment directives on pollution, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority has arrested over 25 residents for illegal dumping of waste.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Those arrested by the agency also included six vehicle owners who were caught using their vehicles to dispose of large volumes of waste.

According to Wahab, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, had mobilised the officials in response to a public complaint regarding indiscriminate dumping of waste around Abati Primary School along Shasha Road in the Alimosho area of the state.

He wrote, “In response to a complaint made by National Inland Waterways Authorities about illegal dumping activities occurring at Abati Primary School, Shasha Road, the MD of LAWMA mobilised Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team to address and remediate the issue.

“As a result of the operation, over 25 individuals were apprehended, including six vehicle owners implicated in the disposal of large volumes of waste using their cars.”

Wahab added that all the individuals arrested will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Last month, officials of LAWMA also arrested 50 individuals for improper waste disposal in the Iyana-Ipaja-Egbeda-Idimu area of the state.

In May last year, Wahab disclosed that over 1,000 environmental offenders in the state within a span of a year.
