FIC Report (Abia State) – The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has commended Abia State’s export potential and encouraged Governor Dr. Alex Otti to build on the state’s achievements.
He made this known while Speaking at the 18th Community of Practice meeting of Commissioners of Budget and Economic Planning at Banquet Hall, Government house, Umuahia.
Senator Bagudu emphasized on the importance of local government autonomy for good governance and national development.
Speaking further he also highlighted the ministry’s focus on enhancing functionality and opportunities in local governments nationwide.
In his address as a special guest of honour in the 18th Community of Practice Meeting of Honorable Commissioners of Budget and Economic Planning ,the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti OFR emphasized on the importance of effective planning in driving development initiatives.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy Engr Ikechukwu Emetu FNSE noted that planning precedes development and offers a logical insight into why some societies succeed while others falter.
The Governor also highlighted the need for collaboration between states and local governments in project execution and resource management, particularly in light of the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
He also emphasized the importance of prioritizing prompt payment of salaries and pensions, quality basic education and health services, and security of lives and property.
Otti further in his address underscored the significance of evidence-based planning and the need for a coherent set of responses to navigate the emerging global economic order.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Honorable Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Kingsley Anosike, welcomed delegates to the 18th Community of Practice meeting, expressing Abia State’s delight in hosting the event. He noted that the meeting provides a platform for states to share insights and deliberate on the theme “Local Government Autonomy: Imperative for Good Governance and National Development.”
Anosike emphasized that understanding the theme will lead to a transformative vision, enhancing government impact and sustainable development across the state.
In his words “a productive discussion on the role of local government autonomy will enhance good governance and national development”.
The meeting, themed “Local Government Autonomy: Imperatives of Good Governance and Sustainable National Development,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss the implications of local government autonomy for Nigeria’s development.
