The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to youth development and transformative leadership in Nigeria, during an interactive session with members of the Junior Chamber International ( JCI).
Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that true leadership goes beyond ambition; it requires preparation, integrity, and a relentless commitment to excellence. He described leadership as both scientific and practical, urging young leaders to understand that, just like in chemistry or physics, the outcomes of leadership are determined by the quality of one’s input.
“Leadership is not accidental; it is intentional,” the Minister stated. “It is about character, perseverance, and excellence. And above all, leadership is trust; the greatest capital any leader can possess. Once lost, it is nearly impossible to regain.”
He encouraged the JCI not to shy away from seeking mentorship, support, and partnerships, stressing that his office is not only open to collaboration, but already sees them as worthy partners in shaping the future.
“You don’t need to ask for partnership, I do. Because I see the future in you,” the Minister affirmed. “Let’s bring something special together and show the world that this generation of Nigerians is ready to lead, ready to build, and ready to change the narrative.”
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also highlighted the importance of long-term collaboration with young leaders and emphasized that the Ministry’s engagement with them will not be a fleeting encounter, but a marathon built on shared vision and sustained action.
The Minister appreciated their selfless service, acknowledging the personal sacrifices made, and pledging his support in both words and action. “Please keep doing what you’re doing. It’s more than support it’s a commitment. Let us turn our shared ideals into enduring legacies.”
Earlier, the President of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Oluwatoyin Atanda expressed deep appreciation for the Minister’s reforms, energy, and commitment to national development, especially in driving change and institutional transformation. “We know how challenging it is to create a reform mindset within public service, and we must commend your tenacity and leadership,” she stated.
She said JCI Nigeria, a non-governmental organization, is part of the global JCI movement that was founded in 1915 and currently operates in over 140 countries.
Oluwatoyin explained that, in Nigeria, the organization has been active for 68 years with more than 100,000 members across 30 states and the FCT. She said JCI comprises city members, who are young professionals and entrepreneurs, and members from higher institutions and they undertake community development projects, leadership training, and international collaboration.
Oluwatoyin Atanda stated that, the visit to the Ministry coincides with JCI’s Northern Conference, which is being held in Abuja from August 8–11, 2025, drawing over 300 delegates from across the northern and southern regions of the country. She said the conference will focus on leadership, innovation, and practical steps toward solving local community challenges.
She said JCI emphasized its model of not asking what the government can do for them, but rather asking what young people can do to create lasting positive change. She said their four pillars are Individual Development, Business and Entrepreneurship, Community Impact, and International Collaboration which continue to guide the organization’s programs and outreach.
The Minister commended the initiative and reaffirmed its support for youth-led development and leadership engagement. The meeting ended on a note of mutual respect and commitment to future collaboration for the benefit of the nation.
