MOWAA: Edo State’s Cultural Legacy Under Threat, Says Minister Musawa

FIC Report (Edo State) – In a recent development highlighting concerns over cultural preservation and transparency, Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa has expressed concern over the ongoing controversy, surrounding the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Edo State. She warned that the project’s current trajectory poses a threat to Edo’s rich cultural legacy and called for urgent collaborative efforts to address the issues at hand.

During a courtesy visit to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the Government House on Friday November 15th, 2025 in Benin City, Minister Musawa highlighted the Federal Government’s awareness of irregularities associated with MOWAA, which have raised concerns about transparency and accountability. The Minister described the situation as “an Original sin” that jeopardizes Nigeria’s cultural dignity.

Minister Musawa praised Edo State’s rich cultural history and its critical role in shaping Nigeria’s National Identity. She reassured the Governor of the Federal Government’s commitment to working closely with Local Stakeholders to find a balanced and just resolution. She stressed that this situation requires urgent attention to restore the integrity of traditional institutions and protect Nigeria’s International Cultural reputation.

“The Federal Government’s is committed to supporting efforts that respect history, uphold transparency, and strengthen Nigeria’s cultural legacy,” Musawa stated. She urged the Edo Government to ensure that Traditional Leaders and Local Communities are actively involved in resolving the controversy surrounding MOWAA.

The meeting was attended by several key Officials, including the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilo; Chief of Staff, Gani Audu; Attorney General Roland Otaru, SAN; and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua.

Governor Okpebholo echoed this resolve, reaffirming his Administration’s dedication to integrity, due process, transparency and collaboration with Federal Authorities, Traditional Leaders, and other Stakeholders to ensure Justice and Accountability in the resolution of the MOWAA controversy.

This situation underscores the urgent need for greater oversight and transparency in Cultural Investments, as Edo State’s Cultural Legacy remains a vital part of Nigeria’s National Identity. Both Federal and State Governments have committed to addressing the issues promptly to preserve the Integrity of Nigeria’s rich cultural history.
