NAPTIP and NDLEA Collaborate to Combat Anti-Trafficking and Transnational Crimes; Gains Momentum with High-Profile Awareness Drive

FIC Report (Edo State) – In a concerted effort to tackle the complex web of organized transnational crimes plaguing Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) joined forces in Benin City, Edo State, to reinforce their commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in human trafficking and drug trafficking.

The Joint initiative took center stage during a vibrant Anti-Trafficking and Anti-Drug Campaign held on July 30th, 2025, in Commemoration of the 2025 International Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The event featured a symbolic road walk and Community Sensitization rally that attracted a wide array of Stakeholders, including Government Officials, Law Enforcement Agencies, Traditional Rulers, Faith-based Organizations, Youth Groups, and International Partners.

Led by the Benin Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Mr. Sam Offiah, and supported by NDLEA’s Edo State Commander, Mr. Michel Ofuenyenju, the campaign sought to raise Public awareness about the interconnected nature of Human Trafficking and Drug Crimes, which are often orchestrated by sophisticated transnational Criminal syndicates.

Addressing participants at the rally, Mr. Offiah underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in combating these crimes that threaten societal stability and individual safety. “Human trafficking and drug trafficking are not isolated issues; they are intertwined crimes driven by well-organized criminal networks operating across borders,” he explained. “Our partnership aims to disrupt these networks, protect vulnerable populations, and bring perpetrators to Justice.”

The rally, which commenced at the NAPTIP Office near Adesuwa Grammar School and traversed key streets to the Youth Renaissance Centre along Ihama Road, was marked by energetic participation from community members. Participants donned T-shirts with messages such as “Stop Human Trafficking” and “Fight Drug and Human Trafficking,” while distributing flyers and engaging residents in conversations about the risks and consequences of these organized Crimes.

Adding a significant dimension to the event, NDLEA Operatives apprehended two suspected Drug traffickers at the Ihama axis during the rally, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and Inter-Agency cooperation in fighting Transnational Crime syndicates.

Mr. Ofuenyenju emphasized that Drug Tafficking often serves as a revenue source for Human Traffickers, and vice versa, making joint operations critical. “Our strategies are Intelligence-Led and collaborative, aimed at dismantling these Criminal networks from their roots,” he stated.

This Joint campaign underscores Edo State’s strategic importance as both a hotspot and a frontline in Nigeria’s fight against Organized transnational crimes. As Authorities and Communities continue to unite, the message is clear: collective vigilance and cooperation are essential in eradicating these heinous crimes that threaten Societal Peace and Security.

With sustained efforts and strengthened partnerships, Nigeria is taking decisive steps toward disrupting the operations of transnational Criminal Groups, safeguarding its Citizens, and upholding Justice across borders.
