The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), led by the Executive Secretary, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, made a noteworthy stride today by advocating for increased funding support for students with disabilities in Nigeria at the National Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) office.
This initiative aligns with sections 18 to 20 of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, which emphasizes equitable access to education for persons with disabilities.
During the meeting, Chief Gufwan lauded NELFUND for its commendable efforts to accommodate students with disabilities through inclusive funding initiatives.
Highlighting the rising number of youths with disabilities seeking educational sponsorship, he emphasized the potential of these individuals to contribute meaningfully to society if provided with adequate support.
“Our office has received numerous requests from intelligent persons with disabilities who are eager to build their capacity through higher education,” Chief Gufwan stated.
He further emphasized the Commission’s commitment to data-driven strategies that will advance its mandate and stressed that disabilities should be viewed as sources of strength rather than limitations.
Chief Gufwan also encouraged NELFUND to develop a sustainable repayment plan that would support students in achieving their educational and career goals, ensuring the organization’s long-term impact.
Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, expressed his appreciation for the NCPWD delegation’s visit, reaffirming NELFUND’s mission to provide educational loans to Nigerian youths facing financial challenges.
He outlined policy measures specifically designed to ease loan access for students with disabilities, recognizing them as vital stakeholders in the Agency’s mission to promote educational inclusion.
Additionally, Mr. Sawyerr disclosed that NELFUND has established a committee to address the unique challenges faced by students with disabilities, including those who may acquire disabilities during their educational journey.
“We are pleased to announce the upcoming NELFUND Foundation, which will provide targeted support for students who unexpectedly face disabilities,” he said.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Sawyerr urged all individuals to remain resilient in the face of adversity, affirming that courage is essential to achieving success in life.
This partnership between NCPWD and NELFUND marks a significant step toward ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive in their educational pursuits.
