National Human Rights Commission Marks 30th Anniversary, Reaffirms Commitment To Freedom, Equality And Justice

FIC Report (Benue State) – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commemorated its 30th anniversary alongside the global celebration of International Human Rights Day, with a symbolic Walk for Human Rights held in Abuja on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

In his welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief (Dr.) Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, FICMC, expressed profound gratitude to partners, stakeholders, and human rights defenders for their unwavering support over the years. He noted that this year’s Human Rights Day holds special significance as it coincides with the Commission’s three decades of service to the Nigerian people since its establishment in 1995.

Dr. Ojukwu highlighted that the celebration also presented an opportunity to honour outstanding partners who have demonstrated courage, consistency, and commitment to advancing human rights in Nigeria. According to him, their support strengthens the Commission’s resolve and affirms that its work is valued by the public.

Reflecting on the Commission’s journey, he described the anniversary as both a celebration and a reaffirmation of purpose—rooted in the principles of Freedom, Equality and Justice. Despite the nation’s security, social, economic, and political challenges, he assured that the NHRC’s dedication to its mandate remains steadfast.

Dr. Ojukwu emphasized that the day’s symbolic walk was not a protest but a demonstration of unity, resolve, and shared responsibility to uphold human rights in Nigeria. He stressed that human rights flourish where communities embrace harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.

Reaffirming the Commission’s mandate, he stated that the protection, promotion and enforcement of human rights cannot be carried out by the Commission alone. He called on Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), the private sector, and all Nigerians to actively contribute to building a nation where human rights are upheld as daily realities rather than distant aspirations.

“As we celebrate 30 years of the National Human Rights Commission,” he stated, “we do so with gratitude for the past, responsibility for the present, and hope for a future where Freedom, Equality and Justice remain the heritage of every person in Nigeria.”

He concluded by thanking all participants for their solidarity, their commitment, and their belief in the transformative power of human rights.
