FIC Report (Imo State) – The Imo State Police Command has strengthened its community engagement efforts with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and residents as part of activities marking this year’s National Police Day.
This was contained in a statement issued in Owerri by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, who disclosed that the initiative featured a sensitization programme on electoral violence and road safety, alongside a medical outreach held at Arugo Motor Park, Owerri.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the NURTW, was aimed at promoting peaceful electoral participation, enhancing road safety awareness, and encouraging healthy living among motorists and the general public.
During the sensitization exercise, participants were enlightened on the dangers of electoral violence, thuggery, and other unlawful activities, with a call on citizens to remain law-abiding and supportive of efforts to maintain peace and order.
The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, urged members of the NURTW to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to aid in the fight against crime and criminality. He also cautioned motorists against reckless driving, emphasizing strict compliance with traffic rules to safeguard lives and property.
The medical outreach, conducted by the Police Clinic in collaboration with Mark of Glory Specialist Hospital and the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, was led by Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. Mark Okhulegbe, and Consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr. Opara Daniel.
The team delivered health education and carried out free medical screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol levels, as well as eye, ear, and oxygen saturation tests, with appropriate referrals made for further care where necessary.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the NURTW, represented by the Secretary, Comrade Charles Oduagu, commended the Police Command for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.
Also in attendance was the Chairperson of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Imo State Chapter, Hajiya Maryam Bosso, alongside members of the association, who participated in support of the outreach and community service efforts.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the safety, health, and well-being of residents, noting that effective policing extends beyond crime control to include proactive community engagement and public enlightenment.
The Command expressed appreciation to all partners and stakeholders, assuring Ndi Imo of its continued dedication to people-oriented policing.
